When the Gods travel to visit Their Devotees

What doesn’t God do for His devotees? He cares for His devotees; He takes their suffering upon Him; He comes out of the temple and visits them so that they can touch Him, feel Him, serve Him.
One such example is of Lord Jagannath’s ardent devotee Madhav Das, who would serve Lord Jagannath all by himself in the Jagannath temple of Puri, Odisha. Madhav Das used to live alone and serve the Lord. Whenever Madhav Das was alone, Lord Jagannath (the eternal Lord Vishnu Himself) would spend time with him and give him company. Once Madhav Das fell terminally ill, so the Lord Himself came to serve Him, so that Madhav Das won’t have to be born again to complete his karmic cycle to bear the fruits of his good deeds. The Lord took his devotee’s 15 days of suffering upon him and fell sick Himself. So, for 15 days the temple doors were closed. This was the time when the temple priests and His devotees would offer Him with fruit juices, porridge and Ayurvedic medicines. Since then, every year the temple doors would remain closed for these 15 days when the Lord becomes unwell. This is also the time, when the idols of Lord Jagannath, His brother Lord Balabhadra (Balaram) and His sister Goddess Subhadra are re-painted.
After 15 days, the Gods come out of the temple in all Their splendor, riding their chariots to visit Mausi Badi (Their Aunt’s temple) known as Gundicha temple. The Rath Yatra or car festival is held during the Hindu month of Asadha (June–July), attracting thousands of devotees and visitors each year. On their way in the chariots, they give an open darshan (view) to all Their Devotees. This is the time, when the devotees get a chance to pull their chariots using choir ropes tied in front of the vehicles. The devotees offer their seva (services) through various food offerings of their choice. They offer their performing arts, such as telengi baja (rhythmic beating of gongs), banati khela (acrobatics), nagarakirtan (public singing and dancing) including Gotipua, one of the oldest in the list of traditional dances.
Thousands of devotee flock to Puri every year to attend the Jagannath Rath Yatra. The centuries-old chariot procession is not only a religious ritual but also a display of the Jagannath consciousness that has long enriched the cultural heritage of Odisha.
The Rath Yatra festival is celebrated in Jagannatha temples across India, South East Asia and various parts of the world.

Book Review - Sahi & Sudheer - a love story by author Yogita Warde

Feature book Review- Saahi & Sudheer by @author.yogitawarde

I picked up a romantic novel after a long time as I was mostly engrossed with sci-fi and historical fictions : ) .
When I read this book, it  brought a smile on my face due to its sweetness and simplicity. I loved how Saahi and Sudheer got connected since school days and gradually helped each other to bring out the best in each other’s lives. After all, isn’t love supposed to do exactly this.

Sometimes we realise the love only when we separate from the one whom we love immensely. The book highlights this so well.

The book also brings up the concept of soul mates. Call it karma or destiny, life always finds a way to bring soul mates together.

This is a book with nuances of human emotions spread across the story line, which every person can relate to.

The story writing is simple, lucid and yet remarkably put across to bring in those moments of tears and joy.

This is the author's debut book. She has already penned several books and more to come in future. The book is originally in Hindi and translated to English. The book is available on Amazon.

I wish all the best to Yogita and request her to keep sharing such stories.

Arrival of the Gods - A video book

Here is an altogether different mesmerizing #scifi thriller in the form of a #videobook.
Video book is a relatively new concept after the advent of the #audiobooks that happened around a couple of decades back.
My friend, author Adrien Hingert is launching his book 'Arrival of the Gods' as a video book. This is what he refers to as the fifth evolution in the history of book publishing. And what better to choose than scifi genre itself. As mentioned in his blog, its made with the help of a closely knit artists to provide breathtaking #visualizations with an audio narration.

Arrival of the Gods is a hard scifi set five years after #aliens find our planet #Earth. What looks like a peaceful event between the two #civilizations, is actually not.

You can follow Adrien's work in his blog @arrivalofthegods

He is launching the official trailor by Aug 1st.

Pushpak Vimana

The ten headed #Rakshasa (demon) #Ravana used his #Pushpaka #Vimana (The bird shaped flying machine) to traverse across the world. He stole it from his half brother Kubera, who was in turn gifted with this technological marvel by Vishwakarma, the architect of the Gods on the advise of Lord #Shiva. Were our great ancestors spiritually and technologically far more advanced? You will find reference of this in my story "The Last War" , a mythological science fiction story.

Lucky - A speculative fiction by a young writer

Featured book - Lucky by Roli Mohanka.

An amazing #speculative short fiction by a very young author, who is still in her schooling and studying.
I was amazed by the concept and imagination of Roli who wrote such a wonderful story through the eyes of a 'Man eating Lizard'.

The story has a good mix of #sciencefiction and #fantasy and the author justifies the #speculative nature of the story.

The ancient magic and technology....

What if the descendants of the #Pandavas witnessed the same #ancient technology and magic that their great ancestors had witnessed during the time of the great #Mahabharata War?
Does war ever stop. Almost in every decade, era and epoch, we hear of a war in some part of the world. These wars are often fought for greed, for heroics, for power and for money. But the one fought to defend one's land and to stand for #righteousness in the society to maintain #peace is probably considered the most #virtuous act of all, referred to as #Dharma Yudh in our ancient Indian scriptures. The Last War & Other Stories is such a story based on mythological science fiction.

The Last War & Other Stories - A Fascinating and interesting fiction - feedback

It's an awesome feeling to receive a wonderful feedback from such a senior and learned person.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book - 'The last war' by Sambit Daspatnaik. A combination of a novel and a collection of short stories is a pleasant surprise. More than anything, I enjoyed the author's passion about '#Bharath' and it's #culture / treasure. Specifically, I like 'The holy temple of Eula'. It shows the high spiritual thinking the author has.
Best wishes for Sambit Daspatnaik to write more and more

- Sriram Krishnamurthy, senior Agile Coach and mentor.

The Chronicler of the Hooghly & Other Stories - A Review

I love historical fantasies... and one may call it synchronicity that I had this wonderful opportunity to connect with Shri Shakti Ghosal, author of the book 'The Chronicler of the Hooghly', which is a historical fantasy.

Shakti is an engineer, an IIM Bangalore graduate,  a coach and calls himself a maverick. He provides leadership and performance incubation through online training, webinars, and coaching. He is a visiting professor at IIMs.
His multiple talents doesn't end here. He is a published author which reflects in his debut book 'The Chronicler of the Hooghly & Other Stories'.

Shakti has also provided a testimonial for my book 'The Last War & Other Stories' that you can find in the 2nd edition of my book.

When I read his debut book, I was fascinated to see how beautifully he has narrated such wonderful tales. I would call it as one of the finest historical fantasy with a pure advantage of getting a chance to experience the historic city of Kolkata during the British times. The portrayal of complexities in human relationships in the backdrop of the British Raj is impeccable. Each of the characters are well thought of, along with a good amount of research done on history.

The portrayal of Shanti, the differently abled child in the story Ashtami is heart touching. The subtle change in the chanting syllables of Goddess from Shakti (power) to Shanti (peace) at the end is thought provoking and leaves the readers to draw their own references.

The complexities in the human relationships, the evolving social fabric and the affluence in India over the past 100 years and a critical comparison of the pandemic in the 1920's and 2020's makes the story Pandemic commendable.

The story Fault Lines, subtly juggles between the technical fault lines in the building construction and the fault lines that we often see in the human nature and fallacy.

Coming to the main story, The Chronicler of the Hooghly. It is in itself a masterpiece that weaves the history of Kolkata through the centuries, interwoven beautifully through the strings of the pearl necklace. Along with a historical ride, the story carries with it a sense of eeriness. Earlier, I had read the stories and works of Swami Vivekananda, about the temple of Maa Dakshinwshwari Kali and the appointment of Gadadhar as the temple priest who later came to be known as the beloved master, Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. But this story references this from such a different and beautiful angle, that I had never imagined.
The story reminds me of the story 'Monihaar' written by Thakur Rabindranath Tagore and later made into a movie by Shri Satyajit Ray.

Overall, the multiple stories remind me of Shri Satyajit Ray's short stories and movies, while the beautiful narration in the backdrop of Indian history reminds me of E.M. Foster's 'A passage to India'.

The language, the diction, the knowledge and the references shared through the stories reflect on the in-depth knowledge of the author, and how well read and experienced he is.

I wish Shakti all the best for his future books and strongly recommend everyone not to miss this amazing book.
