The Last War - Chapter 4
Agrasena, along with his angarakshaks, travelled through the forest and deep valleys. They encountered wild animals, attacks from local tribes, and rough weather and finally reached the golden gates of the city of Thanjavur.
The golden gates of the city opened. Agrasena and his angarakshaks entered the city walls. They were awestruck with its magnificence. Agrasena’s perception of a dilapidated Southern region was proved to be wrong. The city was a beautiful piece of architecture. It was very well planned. The houses were built with grandeur and covered vast areas and were surrounded by private gardens. The roads were made of a special material that was hard and strong. The horse carriages and transport means could travel faster in this better infrastructure. As they were being taken in horse carriages into the palatial area, they saw thousands of temples spread across the city. The temples were similar in structure with pyramidal domes, but differed vastly in the way the carvings and murals were done. They depicted the past history of Lord Mahadeva, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, Goddess Shakti representing the primordial energy and Lord Vishnu’s evolutionary avatars (forms). The temples also had carvings of the Devas like he had seen in the kingdoms across the Northern region.
