Excerpt from my book "The Last War & Other Stories" The Last War - Chapter 4 - The Trip to South

Excerpt from my book "The Last War & Other Stories"
The Last War - Chapter 4
Agrasena, along with his angarakshaks, travelled through the forest and deep valleys. They encountered wild animals, attacks from local tribes, and rough weather and finally reached the golden gates of the city of Thanjavur.
The golden gates of the city opened. Agrasena and his angarakshaks entered the city walls. They were awestruck with its magnificence. Agrasena’s perception of a dilapidated Southern region was proved to be wrong. The city was a beautiful piece of architecture. It was very well planned. The houses were built with grandeur and covered vast areas and were surrounded by private gardens. The roads were made of a special material that was hard and strong. The horse carriages and transport means could travel faster in this better infrastructure. As they were being taken in horse carriages into the palatial area, they saw thousands of temples spread across the city. The temples were similar in structure with pyramidal domes, but differed vastly in the way the carvings and murals were done. They depicted the past history of Lord Mahadeva, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, Goddess Shakti representing the primordial energy and Lord Vishnu’s evolutionary avatars (forms). The temples also had carvings of the Devas like he had seen in the kingdoms across the Northern region.

Chapter 3
Veerabhadra continued, “We have a secret sector near the Sindhu (Indus) river, where no one is allowed. It is heavily guarded. That is where the Devas regularly visit on their Vimanas (the celestial flying machines).”
Agrasena interrupted, “And I thought that the Vimana of Asura Dashanana (The ten headed Ravana), thousands of years ago was a myth.”
Veerabhadra replied, “No, Lord Vishwakarma (The architect of the Gods) had built it for Lord Brahma who later gifted it to Kubera.”
Agrasena said, “If the Devas are in our land and on our side, then why do they not help us directly?” Veerabhadra replied, “I don’t know the exact details, but what I overheard from various sources in the palace is that, the current rules and laws in Akash Ganga (the Milky Way galaxy) does not allow the use of Deivi Astras (Divine weapons) on Prithvi (planet Earth). However, they help us indirectly by giving us better life style, traditions, genetically improvised healthy food, knowledge of Ayurvedic medicines and surgery and many things. In fact, many generations back, Shushruta had mastered the Ayurvedic science of treatment and was the first to create a proper structure and discipline in this area."

An Excerpt from my book - "The Last War & Other Stories" from the main story "The Last war" - Chapter 2

An excerpt from my book "The Last War & Other Stories"
The Last War - Chapter 2

Charulata was surrounded from all sides by the swordsmen on foot. They were all attempting to kill her. Charulata used her sword swiftly and was able to defend their fatal blows. However, every now and then, they were able to penetrate her defence inflicting her with several wounds. She now had bruises all across her body. Her mouth was bleeding. She wiped her mouth from her hand and continued to fight. The Mayavi picked up another sword, and used both the swords together. Charulata could not defend herself completely from multiple attacks. One blow was straight on her neck. Charulata decked at the last minute. The sword caressed her neck, enough to cause a fine cut. She was now bleeding even more. Then she got another blow from the Mayavi and she fell on the ground. The Mayavi was eager to strike the last blow from the sword. Charulata was half unconscious by now. Her eyes were half closed. She knew it was all coming to an end. She still raised her sword with all her might. She remembered Agrasena, whom she loved so much. “Hope you were here now to help us,” she thought. Suddenly an arrow hit the Mayavi from behind. He was shocked and cried with pain. Before he could realise what had happened, he fell on the ground… dead. The other swordsmen were hit with successive arrows.

As Charulata lifted her head, she saw Agrasena riding the horse and aiming at the swordsmen with his bow and arrows. He quickly kept the bow across his arm, and rode straight towards Charulata. When he was close enough, Charulata weakly raised her hand. He immediately grabbed it and pulled her with all the force. He then, placed her on the horseback in front of him and rode away as quickly as he could.

Excerpt from my book "The Last War" Chapter 2

Excerpt from my book "The Last War" Chapter 2
The Gandharva army started the onslaught. As they approached closer to the walls, they clashed with the first line of the Hariapan defence that were positioned just outside the high walls. The Paurava army cried in unison “Har Har Mahadeva” (Lord Shiva resides in each one of us). As the two armies clashed, soldiers were being beheaded. Many of the Gandharvas were struck dead with the poisoned arrows launched from the bows of the warriors on the chariots of the Paurava ranks, while the horsemen butchered the on foot soldiers with swiftness of their swords. However, the force with which the Gandharva army attacked was nullifying the heroics of the Paurava army. The enemy was now well within the perimeter of the archers mounted on the walls. The Paurava army outside the walls fighting with the Gandharva army made sure they were closer to the walls enough to avoid the arrows of their own archers. This was like a bait. Charulata was waiting for this time. She ordered, “Now”. She shouted at the top of her voice. “Fire your arrows at will.” The order echoed across the perimeter of the wall. The archers raised their bow in unison and got in position that they had been practicing for a long time. Within a minute, swarms of arrows were seen originating from the high walls and hundreds of enemy soldiers and horsemen were hit and instantly died due to the deadly poison applied on the arrow heads that pierced into their bodies and mixed with the adrenalin rush of blood. "The Last War" Chapter 2
Near the great common bath, was a huge temple of Lord Shiva. The stone slabs were well carved with the stories of Shiva Purana, that sung the glories and the stories of Lord Shiva since the beginning of the universe, and that was even before the first songs were sung by Manu and his descendants. Lord Shiva was referred to as Mahadeva, the Lord of the Devas. Beside Lord Shiva, the temple had statues of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva's consort, the feminine power; and their children, Lord Karthik, the warrior God (born out of their meditative yogic union) and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles (born from Goddess Parvati's skin cells and later transplanted with the elephant head by Lord Shiva Himself). The temple also had carvings and murals of the trinity, Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the sustainer) and Maheshwara or Shiva (the destroyer, who was known to destroy in order to create new). It also had engravings of the Devas, headed by Lord Indra. Along with Lord Indra (The God of lightening), were other Devas like Lord Surya (Sun God), Lord Vayu (God of Wind), Lord Agni (God of Fire), Lord Chandra (Moon God) and so on. The temple also had beautiful carvings from the vedic literature on the stoned walls. It had a pyramidal dome meant to bring in maximum spiritual energy. The pyramidal dome was also believed to connect to the Sky Gods (the Devas). However, since it had not been used for generations for this purpose, the whole belief was now turning into a myth. But the natives believed in the spiritual energy of the pyramidal structures and its spiritual connection with the higher world...

The Last War & Other Stories - An Excerpt

An excerpt from my book "The Last War & Other Stories"

The war was far from over... in fact, it was just the beginning. There was destruction all across the two armies. However, casualties were running high in the army of the Pauravas (the descendants of the Pandavas and the Kauravas), whose kingdom spread across the northern part of the land of Bharata (Ancient India) up to the Hindu Kush,  including the Sindhu  (Indus) Valley region. All prayed and hoped that victory would be in the side of dharma (righteousness).
Senapati (Head of the army) Agrasena was waiting in the palatial hall of king Nripanjaya. Agrasena was the head of the army of the entire Paurava kingdom. He had travelled a long distance over the horse with some of his trusted soldiers from Sindhu (the Indus) valley up to Kausambi, to appraise the highness of what he had witnessed himself... the mammoth invasion of the Gandharvas, who had penetrated through the first line of defence of the huge Paurava army that was defending its borders in the Hindu Kush region. Having seen such a terrible carnage, Senapati Agrasena, on the advice of the noble priest king Dharmasena of the Indus Valley region, had rushed to meet the highness himself. The huge Gandharva army was now marching to capture the city of Hariapa, and the Paurava army was giving a tough resistance... but they were losing ground.
