An excerpt from my book "The Last War & Other Stories"
Charulata was surrounded from all sides by the swordsmen on foot. They were all attempting to kill her. Charulata used her sword swiftly and was able to defend their fatal blows. However, every now and then, they were able to penetrate her defence inflicting her with several wounds. She now had bruises all across her body. Her mouth was bleeding. She wiped her mouth from her hand and continued to fight. The Mayavi picked up another sword, and used both the swords together. Charulata could not defend herself completely from multiple attacks. One blow was straight on her neck. Charulata decked at the last minute. The sword caressed her neck, enough to cause a fine cut. She was now bleeding even more. Then she got another blow from the Mayavi and she fell on the ground. The Mayavi was eager to strike the last blow from the sword. Charulata was half unconscious by now. Her eyes were half closed. She knew it was all coming to an end. She still raised her sword with all her might. She remembered Agrasena, whom she loved so much. “Hope you were here now to help us,” she thought. Suddenly an arrow hit the Mayavi from behind. He was shocked and cried with pain. Before he could realise what had happened, he fell on the ground… dead. The other swordsmen were hit with successive arrows.
As Charulata lifted her head, she saw Agrasena riding the horse and aiming at the swordsmen with his bow and arrows. He quickly kept the bow across his arm, and rode straight towards Charulata. When he was close enough, Charulata weakly raised her hand. He immediately grabbed it and pulled her with all the force. He then, placed her on the horseback in front of him and rode away as quickly as he could.
